FAQ
-
Can I keep chickens in my backyard?
Depends on where you live! Most local municipalities allow a set number of chickens per parcel and some require a permit. We recommend researching online or calling your local zoning office to learn more.
Each customer is responsible for acquiring all the necessary permits to house hens.

How does it work?
The Homegrown Egg will build your coop offsite and drop it off at the specified time. When we drop it off, you will also get everything you need to start producing eggs at home, including 5 hens, a feeder, waterer, bedding, some food, and an info sheet. From there, the homeowner will be responsible for feeding, watering, and caring for your hens.
-
When will I receive my chickens?
At checkout you will be asked to select a delivery window. Pick a week when you know you can be home to accept it. Exact date and timing will be provided two weeks prior to delivery via email.
-
How many eggs should I expect?
A variety of factors will determine how many eggs you get each day (temperature, amount of light, availability of food, breed, etc.). A year old hen lays between 220-260 eggs a year with a higher concentration of those eggs coming between May and October.
-
How old will my chickens be and how long will they lay for?
The hens will be about 6 months old when we drop them off, meaning they are of laying age. Expect a few days for the hens to acclimate to the new surroundings but you should start seeing eggs in the laying box almost immediately!
A typical hen will live 7 years and lay the best between 1-3 years old.

Are home-raised eggs different than store-bought?
Yes, absolutely! Studies have shown home-raised eggs to be significantly healthier than store-bought in several metrics. We believe that healthy hens lay healthy eggs so the better you can treat your girls, the healthier the eggs!
